Sending Out Some Big Love To Generous Restaurants

So, we survived another season of crass commercialism, a time during which the spirit of giving can be dampened by the insatiable need to buy crap we don't need. (Does it sound like somebody got the lump of coal in her stocking? OK, yes, I did, though I swear I wasn't all that naughty.)

This week, we're being buried in an avalanche of feel-good, super special menus with jacked-up prices for New Year's Eve. I don't know about you, but I am not a fan of going out to eat on Dec. 31. It's like Valentine's Day, Mother's Day brunch and the prom all rolled into one. Amateur night.

Instead, I'm making a New Year's resolution to show some love to my favorite restaurants during the long, slooooooow month of January. In particular, I'm going to spend my dining dollars at places that have given back to our community.

Restaurants are always getting hit up to make donations. And you want to hear some warm and fuzzy news? Many restaurants are incredibly generous. I know this from personal experience. As a member of the board of the U-District Food Bank, I've asked for and received a ton of help, mostly in the form of gift certificates which are sold to the highest bidder at the food banks' annual auction.

The folks at Blue C Sushi, Restaurant Zoe, Canlis, Metropolitan Grill, The Pink Door, Elliott's, Taste, emmer & rye, Oddfellows Cafe and Shultzy's were among those who said no prob when asked to help.

A couple of charitable chefs went above and beyond this year: Where Ya At Matt's going to feed a private party his excellent Cajun and Creole fare and the awesome Zephyr Paquette from Elliott Bay Cafe is going to cater a dinner party on her own time/dime.

Now, that's the spirit of giving I can get behind.
