Until Dick's Opens in Edmonds, Just Shake 'N Go
Construction of Dick's Drive-In in Edmonds, the first new location for the iconic local burger chain in 36 years, is moving at a brisk pace. The walls are up, the roof is on, and, in that picture to the right, the outline of the sign can be seen on the rooftop. The new location, the company's sixth, is scheduled to open in December. South Snohomish County burger fans are drooling in anticipation. But December is a long time to wait for a cheeseburger, so where can you find a burger nearby in the meantime? Try Shake 'N Go in Lynnwood.
With a roof line like that, it's gotta be Dick's Drive-In.
Shake 'N Go is a small local chain with franchised locations from Kent to Everett. Each location is individually owned and operated, but the menu and decor at each is generally the same. Menu items include fish 'n chips, wraps, corn dogs, shakes, smoothies, and of course burgers. The interior of the Lynnwood Shake 'N Go is spacious and bright, despite the fingerprints of little monsters--ahem, children--on the windows. Walls are covered with rock 'n roll memorabilia and other Americana themes. Place your order at the counter and grab a seat at one of the dozen or so booths or the handful of tables.
It's tough to turn down a corndog, but I decided to try items similar to what is offered by Dick's Drive-In: a cheeseburger, fries, and strawberry shake. The shake was delivered first, and served as an amuse-bouche, if you will. Thick and packed with an abundance of fresh strawberries, it teetered on the edge of being too sweet, but held back just enough to be perfectly refreshing. The prices are not Dick's-cheap at Shake 'N Go. A cheeseburger will set you back almost $7, but that includes a 1/3 pound fresh ground chuck patty and French fries.
When the burger arrives, it is nestled into a paper wrapping. Keep it there. Otherwise the juices will soon compromise the integrity of the otherwise sturdy bun. The bun felt a little tough to the touch, but the eggy interior was soft and fresh. The patty was juicy and cooked just shy of medium, but was a little overworked. It looked and tasted like someone had gotten a little overzealous in forming the patties. Tasty and well seasoned, but a little mushy.
The burger's supporting cast includes tomato, onion, pickles, whole leaf lettuce, and house sauce. The construction of the burger at Shake 'N Go is good, and although I usually prefer chopped lettuce, the burger stayed intact despite the great deal of house sauce (read: Thousand Island-style sauce) trying to escape. The huge mound of fries are thick and crispy, with just a little skin remaining on the ends. Potato foreskin. Shake 'N Go is a little pricier than Dick's, but the burgers are bigger, the shakes are satisfying, and the fries are abundant.
