Cruising at Sun Liquor Distillery

The digs: Best known for being the first (legal) bar on Capitol Hill to distill and serve its own liquor, there's much more to Sun Liquor Distillery than meets the eye. The space was hand-hewn by owner Michael Klebeck with added touches by local artists--most noticeably, Tina Randolph's whimsical world map covering the main wall of the space. Klebeck's personal touch is evident in every nook and cranny, from the vintage badminton set outside the restrooms to the Heywood-Wakefield inspired details of the woodwork. Spending time at Sun Liquor Distillery is like spending the day cruising the high seas in classy 50s Chris Craft splendor.

The deal: $2 off menu cocktails, $3 off well highballs.

The verdict: Sun Liquor Distillery's happy hour focuses, understandably, on the booze. A few bucks off a tasty drink is a great way to end the day and the variety of menu cocktails offers no shortage of choices: a bubbly, blushing Scarlett Lady, the rum-punched Libby's Mai Tai, and dependable Old Pal are among the favorites. The kitchen menu isn't included in happy-hour deals, but a basket bursting with shoestring french fries--fresh, hot, perfectly yielding and tossed generously with a smoky mix of spices--is a perfect accompaniment to just about any cocktail.
