Krispy Kreme SODO: the Perfect Location to Cure Your Late-Night Sugar Cravings

When the late-night munchies strike, you have two options: Scrounge together something at home, or make a dash for some fat-soaked, quick food.

Looking disheveled, my hair askew, I chose the latter last Wednesday around 10:30 p.m. Then the hard decision: Where to go? For some time, I'd been craving Krispy Kreme, a comfort-food favorite born in my home state, North Carolina.

For all you local doughnut aficionados, yes, I've had Top Pot. But there's something so utterly delicious and satisfying about Krispy Kreme's glazed varietal. They are, in a way, the Coca Cola of the doughnut world: an old favorite that's not overly exotic, but refreshingly familiar.

A few days before, an ex unexpectedly cleared out my apartment, leaving me no bed, no kitchen utensils, cups, plates, etc. Even if I wanted to cook, I had limited options.

So I walked the two blocks from my Pioneer Square apartment to my parking garage, past drug deals and at least a dozen homeless people, and hopped in my car, which had only one working headlight. I drove down First Avenue, praying the cops wouldn't pull me over, and planning an excuse in my head if they did. "It's my birthday tomorrow," I would plead (the truth).

Pulling up to the SODO Krispy Kreme, open from 5:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday, I looked for a drive-through. "If I'm forced to," I thought, "I'll go in looking like a scraggly mess." The gods had compassion, however, and as I pulled up, a dozen hot, glazed doughnuts seemed about right, with a small watermelon chiller to wash them down.

Walking back to my apartment a few minutes later, I felt guilty carrying a dozen (by that time, maybe 10) doughnuts past rows of homeless, and vowed that if anybody approached me, I'd turn into the Pioneer Square Santa Claus and dish out Krispy Kreme to the tired and hungry.

That didn't happen, though I brought the remaining seven doughnuts to work the next day and gave them to co=workers.

The moral of the story: If you're hungry, craving sugar, and it's late, you can't beat Krispy Kreme.
