Get a Sneak Peek at Wing Luke's Food Exhibit

Wing Luke's exhibit chronicling Asian-Pacific-American foodways in the Pacific Northwest opens tonight, but you can get a preview on your computer monitor right this very moment.

The museum earlier this year asked Voracious readers to submit photographs referencing their favorite food-related memories, and the results were fantastic. Shutterbugs submitted pictures of scarlet-hued achiote seeds used to redden bun bo hue, toddlers reckoning with pho, and mango skins brimming with glistening ginger tofu. The most evocative images have been hung at "From Fields to Family" and posted in a slideshow here.

Both the slideshow and museum display also include accompanying text explaining the significance of the depicted food. While many of the photographs are stunning without annotation, knowing a slice of toast spread with plum jam reminds Christophe Mayhew of the fallen fruit he salvaged from his grandfather's yard for pitching practice makes the everyday food far more meaningful--which is exactly what Wing Luke curators hope to accomplish with their ambitious exhibit. (For more on whether they succeeded, look for a review on Voracious later today.)

"From Fields to Family" opens with a free reception tonight at 7 p.m., and runs through July 15, 2012. Admission is free tonight, and on the fourth Tuesday of the month for anyone who works a food-related job.
