Pumpkin Whoopie Pie at PCC

Made of two cookie-shaped cakes sandwiching a creamy center, whoopie pies are rather like decadent Oreo cookies. Origin stories suggest that the Amish invented whoopie pies with leftover cake batter, allowing mothers to drop portable desserts into their family lunches. Indeed, the name supposedly refers to the word workmen and children expressed when they found one in their lunch buckets.

OK, so maybe there wasn't a whole lot going on in those days, but who wouldn't get excited over gobbling up two round slabs of cake with cream oozing out of the middle?

Traditionally fashioned from chocolate cake, PCC Natural Market in View Ridge now carries a fall variation--the Paris Pumpkin Whoopie Pie. Pumpkin puree and cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg permeate the cake with the flavor of fall, and lend the wedges a cushy comfort. The cream-cheese filling--whipped to a light and smooth blend--is the perfect balance for the spiced cake. It melts soothingly into the batter, balancing the spicy scents with the more piquant cream cheese.

Although we tend to see fall as a harbinger of a long winter to come, the Paris Pumpkin Whoopie Pie is sure to make you want to celebrate the season.
