Celebrate Almond Roca's 90th Birthday By Adding Weed

Tacoma innovation almond roca turns 90 years old next year, having first been created back in 1923. What better way to start a birthday celebration a little early than by adding some weed to it?

New north Seattle medical marijuana collective The Green Skunk, open just over a week, is offering new patients a free medible on their first visit. While checking them out Sunday, I got a chance to look through their medibles case and selected the medicated Almond Roca by MariJuanka Treats, which, taste-wise, do the Tacoma tradition proud while adding the medicinal goodness of cannabis.

Harry Brown and J.C. Haley, founders of Tacoma's Brown & Haley Co., may or may not have approved, but they certainly wouldn't have been shocked. Marijuana was still federally legal when almond roca was invented, and would remain so for 14 more years, until 1937.

This confection had a lighter complexion than the last medicated almond roca I tried, last June, at Tacoma's Rainier Wellness Center. The MariJuanka Treats version (how the heck is "MariJuanka" pronounced, anyway? Mary Wonka?) was also smaller in size than its Tacoma counterpart, so I wondered if it would be as effective.

While, unsurprisingly, not quite as potent as the larger bar, the MariJuanka Treats Almond Roca was worthy of respect. Its greenish-tinged center afforded a delicious hint of herbal marijuana taste. Having consumed the treat on an empty stomach, the effects weren't long in starting, and stuck around for a good three hours.

These treats are certainly worth the $4 donation, and at that rate, if you (like me) have a considerable tolerance to the effects of cannabis, you can even afford to have two of 'em. While you're there, check out their White Chocolate Truffles, also a good deal at $4.
