Proletariat Pizza Experiments With Delivery

Mike and Stefanie Albaeck's Proletariat Pizza is extremely hospitable to children - "for better or worse, for all the other customers who come in," Mike Albaeck says with a laugh - but the couple recognizes not every young family can manage the disciplinary rigors of eating out. That's partly why the White Center pizzeria this week began delivering its pies.

"We hope to continue to appeal to families who don't feel like packing it up and going out," says Albaeck, who's pulling double duty as owner and delivery guy.

"I'm just getting a feel for it," he says. "It's nice easing into it."

Pizza parlors are unique in having to deal with customer expectations' of home delivery service. Few eaters expect to have pastrami sandwiches, fried chicken or pho brought to their door. But Albaeck says he and his wife felt "putting delivery on top of everything sounded like too much," when they opened the restaurant two years ago. To keep the transition gradual, Proletariat is currently offering delivery in a limited geographic area on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Albaeck says he made 12 deliveries on Monday, when the service debuted.

"We're hoping more people who don't want to leave the house will want a pizza," he says.
